What does “bare clay” mean here? No glaze — the fired clay body itself is the finished surface. On a glazed pot you see a glass layer; on these, you see the material: matte, granular, marked by every pinch and fold of the making. Most of the black clay run (pieces 1727–1769) is bare, and so are the white-buff and marbled vessels around 1571–1597. Bare surfaces carry detail glaze would soften — pale specks, protruding grit, cloth imprints, scored lines.
