A small, rounded dark clay cup with a coarse bare surface and a torn rim, filled with white pebbles and set on dark slate — piece 1732 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

Piece 1732 is a small, deep, round-bellied cup with a torn and uneven rim. Its bare, unglazed wall is a near-black charcoal, coarse and matte, studded here and there with small dark protruding nodules and scattered pale grog-like specks. The uneven rim and softly lopsided body point to hand-forming rather than the wheel; no throwing rings or trimmed foot are visible.

Are those white stones part of the piece? No — the pale pebbles are a photo prop filling the cup; the piece itself is the dark, knobbled clay vessel. Piece 1732 of 10,000, listed at $17.32.
