A closed, rock-like handbuilt boulder — rounded, faceted where the hand left it, settled on a flattened base — in coarse near-black bare clay. The surface is granular and pinched, streaked and dusted with pale marks that gather toward the crown, and a few short seam-like splits open along one flank. A single round hole is bored clean through the top, a pale crusty deposit ringing its mouth; in all three photos a dried grass stem stands in it, leaning out of frame.
What is piece 2281? A closed charcoal boulder, handbuilt in bare clay with one hole bored through its crown, the 2,281st of 10,000 in the series, listed at $22.81.
