A craggy tumbler tapering to a small foot, its rolled rim glossy dark brown above a rough matte lower body, on a sunlit windowsill, piece 1717 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

A tumbler-sized cup that tapers to a small foot and flares to an uneven, softly pinched rim. The rim carries a thick, glossy dark-brown band that rolls over the lip and runs down into a glossy interior, while the lower body is left as rough, matte bare clay — sandy and pitted. Inside, faint concentric rings step down toward the base. It was photographed on a windowsill in strong sun, dusty glass and greenery behind.

Why is only the top shiny? The rim and interior read glossy while the lower wall stays rough and matte — a sharp line between the two. Piece 1,717 of 10,000, listed at $17.17.
