A rounded, upright handbuilt vessel in near-black charcoal, its unglazed wall built into a rough rocky crust that ripples in broad horizontal undulations before breaking to a torn, open mouth. A pale dusty bloom drifts across parts of the surface and around the base. Turned over, the recessed base carries the piece number incised in a loose cursive hand, legible as 1811. The store photographs it on a shelf beside a dartboard, a cup of darts and a work light.
Where is 1811’s number? Cut straight into the recessed base in a cursive hand and still legible as 1811 — one of the pieces that wears its ledger number carved rather than painted. Piece 1811 of 10,000, listed at $18.11.
