Ceramic cup tipped toward the camera, 2133 handwritten in black on its bare foot, a pale blue band and a stippled black patch near the rim visible on the body above, piece 2133 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

A straight-sided cylindrical cup on a flat foot, its cream ground carrying two marks that face away from each other. On one side a solid black patch spans roughly the upper half of the wall from the rim down, its surface stippled with small pits and tiny pale gaps showing through. On the other, a pale blue wash cuts a diagonal across the cream. The interior is plain tan-cream with no decoration. The foot carries “2133” inscribed in black on bare clay.

What does the black patch look like up close? Solid but not smooth: its surface is stippled with small pits, and little pale gaps open through the black. Piece 2133 of 10,000, listed at $21.33.
