What are the pale flecks? On the dark vessels of pieces 1829–1844, fine light specks scatter across near-black clay like frost settled on dark soil — the exact inverse of the sand-speckled look, where dark grains pepper a pale body. On 1829 the dusting covers the whole vessel; on 1832 it holds through all six of its photos; on 1833 it shares the wall with small glossy beads at the rim.
A photo shows the dusting, not the recipe: whether the pale flecks are something in the clay, on it, or of it is exactly what an image can’t prove, so the pages describe the look and leave the material alone.
