What are the dark specks? On the pale greige vessels around pieces 541–619, the surface is peppered with fine dark specks — sand-like grains scattered through the visible clay, cool blue-gray against the warm pale body. On 541 they dust an entire dish; on 542 and 543 they follow blocky, architectural forms; on 562 they help a bowl pass for a hollowed pebble.
A photo can show the pepper, not the recipe: whether the specks are something in the clay, on it, or of it is exactly what an image can’t prove, so the pages describe the look and leave the material alone. That’s the rule for the tag, too — it’s distinct from the speckled-glaze tag, whose pieces show speckling in or under a glaze. Here the speckle reads as bare surface, and the pages say only that.
