What are the horizontal bands on these pots? They’re the coils themselves. A coil-built pot is stacked up from ropes of clay, and on some pieces those ropes are left visible instead of being smoothed away — the wall reads as a stack of ridges, one per coil. It’s handbuilding with the process left on the surface.
Two pieces of the wild-clay stretch show it clearly: 1699, whose store title calls the look a “Layered Ridge Pattern,” and 1701, a “Coil Vessel” banded the full height of its wall. Several neighbors (1698, 1700, 1708) show softer seams and single ridges — those pages describe what’s visible without carrying the tag.
