Shot first in tight macro and then in the hand, piece 1705 is a handbuilt cup in warm terracotta-red clay. Its most striking feature is a scatter of dark, glassy nodules that push up through the surface — some rounded and beaded, some split open, a few catching a metallic silver glint. The walls carry soft horizontal ridges left from coil-building and a web of fine drying cracks, with pale grog flecks freckled through the red body. The torn, uneven rim and softly pinched walls point to forming by hand rather than throwing.
What are the dark specks studding the clay? They read as small glassy nodules that have pushed up through the red surface, scattered from rim to base, a few opening into little craters. Piece 1705 of 10,000, listed at $17.05.
