First of the range’s rocky chawan run — six handle-less tea-bowl cups, 2055 through 2060, that photograph more like river stones than tableware. Here a pale grey plaster-like crust webs the body and tears open to rust-red gritty ground beneath, with pale swipes dragged through the darker fields; the rim wears a dark chocolate crust with a wet glossy sheen. Looking in: a silvery-white glassy line-drawing sits at the well like a doodle in mercury, ringed by a beaded silvery crawl along the rim. The base is buried under heavy rust-red crust, with incised curls half-swallowed by it — visible, but not legible, so they stay unread.
Why does it look excavated? Crust over rust over grit — the layers read like geology, and the pale swipes cut through them like tool marks in a dig. Piece 2055 of 10,000, listed at $20.55.
