What’s the light coating on these dark pots? A thin pale layer sitting over the dark clay — mottled on 1748, cracked patches on 1763 and 1764, near-total veining on 1768 and 1769. In close-ups it reads as a crust on the surface, with dark clay showing through the fissures.
What it’s made of, the photos alone can’t say — but the maker can, and does: it’s glaze, after a fashion. The glaze had settled and caked at the bottom of its bucket, and the thin liquid that never fully mixed back in is what went onto these pots.
