The run’s palette flips. After a dozen quiet white cups, this one is worked over with brushwork: bold black strokes and blobs laid across a white ground, some of the black gone glossy and crawled where it pooled thick, threaded through with sky-blue and cyan washes and a scatter of dark speckle. The cup goes roughly half-dark, the white surviving only in the gaps between marks. The base carries “2159” handwritten in black.
Painted, not stained? Painted — the color arrives by brush here, black gesture over blue wash, the first of a small family of hand-decorated cups breaking up the white run. Piece 2159 of 10,000, listed at $21.59.
