Dark grey-black handbuilt ceramic boulder photographed in a workshop, its crown a field of cobalt melt pools and white foamy blobs around a small round mouth, one closed pulled loop and one open prong at the shoulders, piece 2042 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

Another workshop session — boxes, concrete floor, workbench in frame — for a dark grey-black gritty egg on a rough base. Its two shoulder appendages tell different stories: one a closed pulled loop, the other an open prong, each as fired and photographed. The crown is the third of the batch’s blue summits after 2037 and 2041: vivid cobalt and ultramarine melt pools crowd a small dark round mouth, mixed with white foamy marble-like blobs and pink-tan sand grit, flashing iridescent in the raking workshop light over the smeared near-black handbuilt body.

Is piece 2042’s prong a handle? It holds like one story and reads like another — a loop that chose to stay open. The photos record it exactly as it left the kiln. Piece 2042 of 10,000, listed at $20.42.
