Handbuilt pinched ceramic bowl in pale speckled grey-tan with a wobbly finger-pinched rim, a horizontal orange-rust band wrapping the lower belly, piece 2043 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

After forty closed and necked forms, the batch opens up: a wide hand-pinched bowl, its wobbly rim keeping every fingerprint of the pinching. The pale grey-tan speckled body carries cracked crust texture, and a horizontal orange-rust band wraps the lower belly where warmer tone shows through the pale surface. Thin clear gloss catches in beads and drips along the rim edge and in a few licks at the speckled, finely pocked interior well — patchy sheen rather than a continuous band, so it stays in prose.

Is piece 2043 really the only bowl in fifty pieces? It is — one open form standing against twenty-three boulders, a reminder the series doesn’t owe any shape a quota. Piece 2043 of 10,000, listed at $20.43.
