Near-black tapered handbuilt ceramic boulder photographed in a sunlit workshop, its crown carrying vivid ultramarine crust patches and clusters of white glassy beads around a tiny round mouth, piece 2041 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

Photographed not in the lightbox but out in the workshop — sunlit concrete, buckets, the glaze cart in the background — this near-black egg tapers down to a narrow foot while its crown does all the talking: vivid ultramarine granular crust patches mixed with clusters of white glassy pebble-beads around a tiny round mouth, kin to the blue dome of 2037 and the white beads of 2039. In the raking sun the dark melt around the crown throws an iridescent, oil-slick glitter that the studio shots catch honestly. The body below is bare smeared near-black handbuilt clay.

Why is piece 2041 photographed outside the lightbox? The workshop sun earns its keep — the iridescent sheen at the crown only ignites in raking light. Piece 2041 of 10,000, listed at $20.41.
