A tall straight-sided cup, waisted a little at the middle, its rim running uneven the whole way round. The wall is weather rather than pattern: mottled blue-green and teal washing over cream, warm patches of bare clay surfacing through, a darker blue-grey field banking up one side and a dark line drawn along the rim. Rust-amber pin-spots sit in it here and there.
Across the middle of that wall, in black, are handwritten words: “I’ve” above, “writ” below, brushed in a plain hand that slopes gently downhill as the wall curves away, then carries on around the cup. Everything else here is brushed decoration.
The two overhead views go the other way entirely: the interior is bare grey-brown clay, unglazed, turning in spiral forming rings, with one fine line tracking across the floor of the well and a pale glazed lip above it. Underneath, on the bare base, “2082” is handwritten in black.
Is that really handwriting? Plain letters, brushed straight onto the wall — “I’ve” over “writ” — sloping downhill the way a hand does when the surface curves out from under it. Piece 2082 of 10,000, listed at $20.82.
