Piece 1940 is a cream-bodied cup turned on the wheel — faint throwing rings circle the pale clay, and the lower two-thirds are left bare. A soft band of grey glaze rings the rim and runs down the side in a fat tear or two.
Loose brown brushwork sweeps across the body in a few dark strokes, and the glazed interior holds a ring of tiny frozen bubbles and small red flecks.
What gives this plain cup its accents? A dripping grey rim and a couple of quick brown strokes are the only marks on an otherwise bare, wheel-thrown cream body. Piece 1940 of 10,000, listed at $19.40.
