Piece 1900 stands tall and open-mouthed, its near-black charcoal walls pinched and uneven and its rim torn into a soft, ragged edge — a hand-formed vessel with no sign of the wheel. The surface reads coarse and granular, and pale, grog-like particles surface across the dark ground like flecks of ash.
Two glassy spots of blue sit toward the middle of one face, bright against the darkness, with a paler blue-grey crust drifting down from the rim. Chalky white deposits and a single mint-pale splash break the charcoal in a few other places.
Why does such a dark pot flash with blue? Two small pools of blue glass and a scatter of pale grit are the only bright notes on an otherwise charcoal, hand-built body. Piece 1900 of 10,000, listed at $19.00.
