A hard turn from the painted cups around it: 2096 is bare sand outside — warm tan-grey, gritty with white specks and fine dark flecks, a rust-brown toasted band circling the lower body — and wet white glass inside, where the rim rolls over into a fully glazed glossy liner. The two surfaces meet in a clean-ish line at the rim like a beach meeting surf. Its base holds an inset recessed medallion of smoother clay with “2096” scrawled into it, incised without ink. Its sandy twin is next door at 2097.
Why is the outside rough and the inside glass? Grip and sip, respectively — sand for the hand, gloss for the mouth, one rim roll between them. Piece 2096 of 10,000, listed at $20.96.
