White speckled handmade ceramic cup crossed by a bold navy-black band stroke with turquoise wash beside it, piece 2094 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

Second cup of the splashed tail that follows the abstract-cups range, and the boldest mark in it. A tapered cup, wider at the shoulder than the foot, cream-white and finely speckled — and straight across the middle of it runs a navy-black band, laid on thick, doubling back on itself near the rim and ending in a blunt head where the brush lifted. Turquoise wash sits either side of it, one patch pale and spreading, another a small vivid dot; dark spatter freckles the cream between them, blue pinprick specks gather low near the bare foot.

The band keeps going the whole way round, thinning to a stroke and then swelling again into a solid mass on the far face, with cream breaking through underneath it. The interior photographs pale grey-brown and glossy. Underneath, on the bare disc base, “2094” is handwritten in black, stacked on two lines.

Are those clouds or splashes? Both reads work — the wash drifts, the band commits, and the same cup carries them side by side. Piece 2094 of 10,000, listed at $20.94.
