A stout grey-brown handmade cup with a torn rim and a rough, sandy surface, on a paint-marked studio table — piece 1804 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

A stout, open cup, roughly as tall as it is wide, with a torn and craggy rim and a dark interior visible at the mouth. The wall is a rough, sand-textured crust, gritty and irregular, reading grey-brown under the warm studio light. Its hand-formed, uneven walls lean and swell rather than run true. It stands on a paint-marked work table with stacked bats, a plant and a splash pan behind.

Can you actually drink from something this rough? It is built as an open cup with a usable mouth, though the sandy, craggy exterior is very much the character of the piece. Piece 1804 of 10,000, listed at $18.04.
