A bronze-sheened, rock-textured open vessel with a torn rim, holding dried lavender on a studio worktable, piece 1720 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

An upright open vessel with rough, molten-looking walls and a torn, uneven rim — shown holding a few stems of dried lavender. The surface is a dark, glossy bronze metallic sheen — salt-fired — pitted and craggy, its handbuilt walls leaning off true. Set on its side, the domed base carries an incised “1720” among pale sage-green and gold patches. It was photographed on a studio worktable, shelving and daylight behind.

What are the pale patches on its base? Soft sage-and-gold patches ring the incised number on the underside; the page notes them without explaining them. Piece 1,720 of 10,000, listed at $17.20.
