Dark, heavily crusted jar with pale angular inclusions breaking through its surface and a torn rim edged in glossy shine, piece 1716 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

A jar whose surface has gone to crust — dark brown, cracked and lumpy like bark, studded all over with pale angular inclusions that break through the dark. The rim is torn and irregular, edged in a glossy, beaded shine where the light rakes it. Around the body the wall swells in irregular handbuilt bulges, band over band. It was photographed in the workshop, other pots behind it.

What are the pale chips in the surface? Lighter material embedded in the dark body, surfacing across the whole jar. Piece 1,716 of 10,000, listed at $17.16.
