Rust handbuilt ceramic tea-bowl cup with pale marbled swipe zones and a dark glossy crusted rim, piece 2066 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

A rust tea-bowl cup whose pale zones smear through the body color like cream stirred once and stopped — a marbled look the photos can’t pin to any particular material, so it stays a look. The dark glossy crust rides the rim as it does across the whole chawan company. Inside is the run’s best drawing: a clear silvery spiral wound at the well of the swirled interior, sixth and finest of the batch’s silvery line-marks. Underneath, “2066” is incised clean and legible.

What’s the spiral inside? A thin silvery line that winds into the well like a thumbprint in mercury — drawn by glaze, heat, or hand, the photos won’t testify. Piece 2066 of 10,000, listed at $20.66.
