The boulder family taken to its logical end: a near-black handbuilt sphere — a cannonball of clay — whose only opening is a small crater sunk into the top. Pale sandy scuffs drift across the shoulder in both photos. Of all the closed forms in the 1848–1899 run, 1879 is the most complete circle.
