Near-black egg-shaped handbuilt rock-form ceramic vessel with a torn, tilted triangular mouth, piece 1864 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

An egg among the boulders of the 1848–1899 run: handbuilt, near-black, smooth-shouldered for its family, with a torn triangular mouth opening at a tilt. Faint pale scuffs and rows of combed impressions cross the lower body — light marks on a dark stone.

Where’s the opening? At the top, but askew — a torn three-cornered mouth that leans off-axis, the piece’s one act of drama. Piece 1864 of 10,000, listed at $18.64.
