Close view of a dark hand-built cup's surface, near-black clay peppered with yellow and green flecks over an impressed grid — piece 1783 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

A cup built by hand, rounded toward the base and narrowing to a torn rim. Its dark body is impressed with a grid of shallow square cells and peppered all over with small yellow and green glassy flecks, thickest in the recesses, with a pale crazed crust breaking along the rim. On the base, the number 1783 is incised into the clay.

What are the yellow and green specks on Piece 1783? Small glassy flecks in those colors are scattered across the dark body; the photos show them plainly but cannot say what they are. Piece 1783 of 10,000, listed at $17.83.
