Ceramic cup dipped almost entirely in glossy jet-black, a flash of turquoise showing at the bare white foot band, piece 2138 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

The darkest cup of the range: glossy jet-black swallows nearly the whole body, brush-and-dip texture rippling across dented walls, black inside as well as out. The coat stops in a ragged wave above a bare white-buff foot band — and right at that boundary one flash of bright turquoise peeks out, the cup’s single note of color, with a lone black dot keeping it company on the bare band. The base disc shows a raised foot ring and “2138” handwritten in black.

How much isn’t black? A thumb-width of bare foot, one turquoise flash, one dot — everything else went under. Piece 2138 of 10,000, listed at $21.38.
