Piece 1903 is a small hand-built cup, its charcoal-dark outer wall matte and sandy, the rim pinched into a wavy, uneven edge. The near-black body has a rough, granular feel to the eye.
Inside, a pale glaze breaks into a frothy, lace-like mottle of cream and dark speckle, gathering in a band at the rim where it meets the dark exterior.
What’s happening inside the cup? The interior carries a foamed, lacy pattern of pale and dark that the plain charcoal outside gives no hint of. Piece 1903 of 10,000, listed at $19.03.
