Tall lobed charcoal-dark handbuilt ceramic vessel whose torn rim opens onto a smooth cream-white interior, piece 1897 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

The tallest of the white-lined pieces: a handbuilt vessel that swells in organic lobes as it rises, charcoal-dark and pocked, until the torn rim opens onto an interior smooth and cream-white as the inside of an eggshell. The close-up holds the whole idea in one frame — coal outside, cream within.

How smooth is the interior? Smoother than anything on the outside — the photos show a soft, even lining where the exterior is all grit. Piece 1897 of 10,000, listed at $18.97.
