After the boulders, a cup that keeps their darkness: handbuilt, matte soot-black, its walls crumpled with dents like a paper bag pressed in at the sides. Short scraped marks — comb-like rows — sit near the rim in both photos. One of the quietest pieces in the 1848–1899 run, all shadow and dent.
What are the marks by the rim? Short parallel scrapes, plainly visible, tool and intent unstated — the photos show rows, not reasons. Piece 1858 of 10,000, listed at $18.58.
