The 1848–1899 run opens somewhere none of the later pieces go: the studio. Piece 1848 sits on a blue banding wheel with rough pots and a work bucket behind it, a handbuilt vessel whose blue-grey wall is pocked with craters from rim to base, like a small weathered moon. The warm workshop light makes exact color a guess, so the page keeps to the texture the photo proves.
