A tall, near-black vessel with a pewter-like metallic sheen, its blistered wall pocked with small craters, narrowing to a small foot, piece 1846 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

An upright, near-black vessel carrying a low pewter sheen that slides over the wall as the light moves. The surface is blistered and molten-looking, and a cluster of small craters pocks the middle of the body. The mouth opens at a torn, uneven rim, and the form draws in to a small flared foot.

Is that a metal finish? Not metal — it’s salt-fired, the pewter-grey luster the salt firing left over a bubbled, cratered wall. Piece 1846 of 10,000, listed at $18.46.
