The closer of the dark pair: a handbuilt pot in near-black clay, photographed once beside 1841 on the studio floor and otherwise alone. Turn it over and its number, 1842, is handwritten in pale strokes straight onto the black base — not cut into the clay like most of its neighbors. The store’s own tag calls it black clay.
How is the number written? In pale strokes on the bare black base — clearly written rather than carved. Piece 1842 of 10,000, listed at $18.42.
