White ceramic cup with a broad sandy-taupe band across its upper body and bare white below, piece 2147 of A Penny For Your Pottery.

The sandier sibling of 2146: same warm-white body and buried grain, but here the sand rises to the surface as a broad sandy-taupe band wrapping the whole upper body, granular and dry-looking, ending in an uneven waterline above bare white. One photo puts the cup in the maker’s hand. Under the turned foot, “2147” handwritten sits in faint dry brown, its tail smeared sideways — the digits still read, the smear just travels with them.

Where does the sand stop? At a wavering line about two-thirds down, sharp on one flank and feathered on the other — the band was applied to end there, and the ending shows its hand. Piece 2147 of 10,000, listed at $21.47.
